Handa Island Explorer Day
Handa Island is a beautiful remote island off the north-west coast of Scotland and is a Scottish Nature reserve and area of specific scientific interest.
It is home to around 100,000 birds in the summer months (April to July) including over 200 puffin pairs, guillemots, razorbills, great skuas, fulmars and a visit is an absolute must for keen bird watchers. Handa also boasts dramatic sea cliffs, beautiful trails and stunning white sand beaches boarding turquoise seas and therefore really offers a delightful day out for everyone.
We reach the island via a small ferry and the short 10-15 crossing is a delight in itself. Our walk incorporates the beaches, the magnificent Torridonian sandstone cliffs and of course the opportunity to see some of the amazing birdlife!
It’s a day not to be missed. Our drive from Ullapool is in itself a joy, with stunning scenery along the way and the opportunity to stop at some iconic viewpoints for memorable photos. There is also the option to self-drive if preferred.
Walk details: 4 miles, 6 km – Ascent 150 m, Descent 150 m – Walking time 2 h (including wildlife watching 3 – 4 h)
Magnificent Sandwood Bay circuit
Our walk today takes us to Sandwood Bay, a 1 mile (1.6 km) stretch of stunning beach that can only be reached on foot or via the sea.
We reach the bay via a well-made track returning along the beautiful coastal clifftop if weather conditions allow. The bay is bordered by large sand dunes and a freshwater Sandwood Loch. It is also known for its prominent sea stack, Am Buachaille which is renowned as being an extremely challenging rock climb and stands at 65 meters high out to sea.
Sandwood Bay beach is considered to be one of the most unspoilt beaches in mainland Britain and there is a wonderful feeling of remoteness here, even though you may see the odd surfer when the winds are favourable. This is also a good place to spot various marine mammals.
The iconic drive from Ullapool and further villages offer stunning views and we can stop for photos at some superlative beauty spots.
There is also the option to self-drive to the start of this beautiful day walk.
Walk details: 9.5 miles, 15 km – Ascent 360 m, Descent 360 m – Walking time 4.5 h
